Glycerine is a sweet, viscose and clear liquid that is commonly used to soften icing and prevent royal icing setting too firm, it's also occassionaly used in some cake and dessert recipes.
Add sparingly to royal icing to maintain a softer cutting texture, or add to tempered chocolate to thicken it for piping work.
