'Paste' is a generic term for what is usually a rollable material made primarily from sugar or chocolate. Sugar paste is the most widely used and most popular choice for cake coverings also known as fondant icing it is a pliable rollable sugar-based paste which can be coloured and rolled thinly to cover your baked cake or sponge. It provides a perfect stable base for adding decoration. If making a fruit cake it is traditional to cover your cake firstly with Marzipan a.k.a. almond paste, before covering it with sugarpaste or royal icing.
