Covering boards and drums isn't just limited to silver and gold board foil. There are some great examples on the web of people that have used fancy wallpaper or wrapping paper. The important thing to remember is that what ever covering you use it needs to be suitable to be in contact with food and has a laminated or water resistant surface.
You'll need some board foil or suitable other covering. A pair of scissors, a rolling pin, ruler, pen and glue (spray glue works best) or cellotape.
Board foil is sent folded or rolled. Any creases can be flattened by ironing it through a tea towel. When deciding where to place the board/drum, consider the pattern and markings on the covering. Also take into account that the middle of the board will not be visible when the cake is placed on it.
Using a pen or pencil trace the outline of the drum onto the back of the covering.
Next draw another outline roughly 1½-2 inches larger then the original.
Cut along the larger outline.
Apply the glue to the face of the board and lay in the position you first outlined. Turn the drum over and using a rolling pin, roll firmly across the surface to remove air bubbles and creases leaving a flawless finish.
Fold each edge of the covering, pressing firmly with a ruler to create a crisp neat line.

Stick each edge to the under side of the board using glue or cellotape.
Press the sides on the board or drum firmly against a table to flatten any creases or imperfections.
If you are struggling to get the edges of the board neat you can also hide your mistakes by attaching a suitably coloured ribbon to your drum.
